hi, platt:
i had written a response to your e and hit the wrong key and off it went
into the wild blue yonder!
i will try to reconstruct it again...
you said:
<Pirsig also describes the mystical experience as contemplating Dynamic
Quality by eliminating symbols altogether.
lithien:
Pirsig got that from Zen where the internal dialogue is stopped and we can
(very temporarily) get in touch with our true nature which can be
characterized as such: where does beauty come from? where does the beauty
of the spider's web come from? from the nature of the spider. where does
our art come from? from our nature. the spider's web and our art come
from the same true nature.
you continue:
<Or, to switch metaphors, the "glue" uniting the mystic, the artist and the
scientist is the pursuit of Dynamic Quality.
lithien:
i like that but i would add that we are expressions of Dynamic Quality and
as such our creations be they webs or art are also its reflection.
Poe's quote: "An immortal instinct, deep within the human spirit, is a sense
of the
beautiful. This is what administers our delight in life" for me this is
Dynamic Quality. This longing for the beautiful, the perfect, is Dynamic
Quality working through us.
but, i wonder what goes awry in murderers and others who delight in
destroying beauty and life?
