hi, platt, you say:
<Just a guess, Lithien. What do you think?
lithien:
well, i will answer you from what i have observed in nature.
there seems to be a cyclical pattern to things, and ebb and flow, a
contraction and a radiating outwards, a reaction to an action, that could
perhaps explain good and evil. what i mean is that when there is fullness
there seems to be a gradual emptying that proceeds from it, and viceversa.
we used to think that forest fires where bad but when we understood the long
term pattern realized that the fires were necessary for the renewal of the
forest. i hesitate to apply this analogy to evil because it is such a
repulsive and emotional concept for us to accept the loss of human life
especially when it seems gratitious or unnecessary.
but perhaps this cycle is not seen by us because of our short lifespan.
maybe there is a bigger pattern that we can only guess at and we cannot
conceive except to catch the pulse and learn to be resistless and go with it
as we catch it before it springs forth again. i hate to think that Hitler
was a necessary ebb of what was good in a flow of evil which somehow renewed
Mankind for something or other.
and ive been trying to see if Pirsig's MOQ could provide some insights into
the matter. one of the things which attracted me was his hierarchy of
values. germs being less valuable than human life, for instance, we could
then make the moral judgement that we could kill germs to preserve human
life, etc. and i didnt understand why this was called subjective when i
thought it seemed very objective to see value in that manner...the higher
the level the more value it had. it seemed simple to me and i liked that
simplicity.
is there anything that would answer the question of evil in the MOQ?
anyone?
Lithien
