Matt, Scott, Steve and all interested parties:
DMB had said:
In short, its not that the poor need to develop spiritually, although
that's probably true in many cases too, its that if the rest of us were
more evolved there would be more justice and less proverty in the first
place.
Kevin replied:
I agree with your diffusion of the chicken/egg problem between spiritual
enlightenment/material security. Very insightful.
Sadly, however, it still brings us back to the questions of means. How
do we effect spiritual enlightenment on those who have material security
(and others if they somehow manage)? What role does the MOQ play in this
spiritual journey? Is the MOQ the only system to effect the necessary
arousal of social conscience?
DMB says:
Is the MOQ the only system? Heck no! We don't need widespread enlightenment,
or rather that would be quite a bit more than is needed. I think its really
much easier than that. All we need are more people who can think for
themselves and who can see beyond their own personal needs and embrace a
larger view. It only requires some improvements in the general level of
evolution, whereas widespread enlightenment would be heaven on earth, which
is a better and farther off improvement. One of my favorite pipe dreams is
that the USA shift its priorities around and spend as much on education as
we now spend on the military.
Scott's comments are encouraging and I tend to see what he's seeing. People
ARE hungry for spiritual knowledge. There are tons of interesting things
going on here in Colorado. Ron DiSanto, one of the guidebook authors, lives
and works in my neigborhood. Ken Wilber lives and works up the road. The
only accredited Buddhist University in North America is here. I suppose most
cities can now bragg about such things. This is just one of many
developments that is feaking out the fundamentalists and the unimaginative
suits.
Thanks for your time,
DMB
