    It's worth pointing out that this is a quotation from Athanasius (he of the Athanasian Creed), and
    underlies the Orthodox notion of 'theosis', which is the core of Christian mysticism. It's been
    there from the start, it's not just a modern development (in fact the Modern developments have
    tended to go against it, as with much US Christianity).

    I've actually suggested a number of books for DMB to chase up where he can investigate these things
