    Hi Dustin:

First, a warm welcome to the discussion of Pirsig's Metaphysics of
Quality. Your first post struck a responsive chord with me. It's so new
and provocative that it deserves its own thread.

    > The "laying on of hands" idea is something that I have questioned myself.

You've put into words better than I've been able to my belief that
awareness, experience, consciousness--whatever name you want to
use for our sense of being--represents a force in the environment that
our brain (a bulb of nerve tissue) taps into, rather than something the
brain generates itself. Every body organ is designed to take advantage
of outside phenomena whether it be the stomach, lungs, eyes, legs or
sex apparatus. That the brain should be an exception strains credibility.

Now that you have identified Quality as the "primary wavelength,"
Pirsig's claim that Quality equals "experience" makes perfect sense. It
fits beautifully with your "antenna theory" which also encompasses the
notion that not only plants, but atoms too, are aware.

Thanks for your contribution. I look forward to more of your thoughts.

    Platt
