    [Platt:]

As for finding out what exactly DQ is, I wonder if you and others think
    >it's necessary to trip out in order to experience DQ?

    [Poot:]
I'm trying to remember where exactly I read it, (either pirsig or huxley)
but regarding the native american rituals involving Peyote , it was given to
"force feed" wisdom on the user, at some sort of "coming of age" ritual. I
believe they would give the person Peyote, and then put them inside a teepee
, or enclosure, and block it off into complete darkness for 3 days , with
only water . thats pretty extreme though for me , or at least would require
some extensive "vacation" time around that......

    [Case]
Especially among the plains tribes young men went though a rite of passage
call the Vision Quest. They left the tribe on their own and did not return
until they had received a vision that would guide them in their life. Often
these visions took the form of spirit animals. I do not think drugs of any
kind played a role in this. I also remember a book I read by either Fool's
Crow or Black Elk, the younger, where the author talked about the use of
peyote versus sweat lodge ceremonies as a means of inducing visions. He
seemed to be saying that the sweat lodges where better but I got the feeling
there was some other motivation behind his preference.
Also in Casteneda's dubious accounts of Yaqui tradition Don Juan has his
apprentice go through a variety of altered states specifically to get him to
shed the static patterns of his life.

As for Platt's question I don't think it is necessary but it is kind of like
walking up the mountain or taking the ski lift. The ski lift is not
necessary but it sure gets you there faster. While walking up the mountain
might have an attraction all its own, if you are interested in skiing you
probably ought to try the lift. Having said that I live in the South and
have totally exhausted my knowledge of snow skiing and ski lifts.
