is true... then how can Peyote be

"the source of their attitudes about freedom, equality, directness and
simplicity." ?

surely these were attitudes and attribute that Indians had for
time-immemorial??

The Peyote ceromony must be something absorbed into the pre-existing culture
of the Indians because it allows them a "quicker and surer way of arriving
at the condition reached in the traditional vision quest..." - which was
already part of their culture.
