Hi John and All,
There may be life in the old dog yet...
JON:
"After all this time in the Lila Squad/MF/MD, I still don't
fully get the difference between "pattern" and
"INTELLECTUAL pattern". I regard the word "intellectual" as
arrogant and superfluous, and I say therefore that ALL
patterns are metaphors."
MB:
There are intellectual patterns distinct from social,
biological, and inorganic patterns. But whenever we
consciously reflect on these non-intellectual patterns (or
even refer to them as patterns), we do so by constructing
metaphors to represent their reality. For example, when we
approach strangers we automatically establish a safe
spatial distance- in accordance with pre-existing social
patterns. But when we're discussing the relative proxemics
of different cultures then these social patterns are being
intellectualized.
JON:
"Some of you will recall me saying that DQ isn't reality,
but the precursor of reality. My understanding of the MoQ's
ontology is that reality comes about when DQ is REALized as
Static Patterns, i.e. as metaphors."
MB:
I partly accept your assertion that DQ isn't reality, if by
reality, you mean our experiencing of reality. But the
reality that exists _apart from_ our perception of it is, I
believe, DQ.
JON:
"The nature of language or any other symbolic system is
that it is infinitely extensible. One can step outside of
yesterday's language into a shell of new language that
becomes part of the language
of today."
MB:
Shedding one's linguistic skin for new growth sounds
promising, but in reality, we are of one static pattern
built upon another, being in a moment never completely free
of the past.
Regards,
Mark B
