Hi Horse and all,
I just realized the real problem with the lists as latching tools . .
. They don't have an ERASE mechanism. Erasing is critical if we are
going to produce anything coherent from all our ramblings. I don't
think any of us would want to see a censor pruning out all the garbage,
but perhaps some of us would like to go back and rewrite our own posts.
I'm not proposing that we implement this on the archives themselves,
because it would be a nightmare. However, we can do this with the
summaries.
I am going to restate my own preferences (based on a single distribution
list):
1. Reduce turnaround time to encourage people to rewrite their posts
before they even send them (no point in firing off a dozen replies
during the day if they're all going to get circulated together many
hours later).
2. Let's encourage the building of digests/summaries - these can always
be reopened. Maybe months later, it will be appropriate to erase and
rewrite sections to reflect evolving views. If the digests are well
written, they will reference the original raw posts in the archive, so
future students of the MoQ can always go back to the source, and make
their own new contributions to the thread.
