Jonathan Magnus and Squad
Hope you don't mind if I butt in to this thread but what you are
saying brings up a few things I've said in the past regarding models
and reality.
JONATHAN:
" I'll repeat, SQ is description."
MAGNUS:
"This is where we disagree. Have a look at the SQ diagram in the
SODV paper.
It states that SQ is all four kinds of patterns, not only descriptions.
Not that I claim that everything Pirsig writes is true, I'm just running
out of arguments."
This seems to be the main bone of contention - what is SQ?
As Magnus says SQ is both reality and description. The MoQ is an
intellectual pattern. In other words it is a model of reality based
upon what reality consists of. If it were not based upon reality it
would be an incorrect model and I do not believe this is the case. It
may not be complete, but that is another matter. It describes what
is real in a way that makes as much sense as any 'scientific'
description, but attempts to do so from a different point of view.
The MoQ as an intellectual pattern/construction is better able to
describe reality than other metaphysical systems, but what it
describes is real.
DQ and SQ are not the SAME thing (as are matter and energy) but
describe different aspects of the same thing.
Anyway I'll butt out now.

"Making history, it turned out, was quite easy.
It was what got written down.
It was as simple as that!"
