No, you didn't miss the point. The reason I asked the question in the
first place was to raise the sort of excellent follow up questions you
pose. Maggie says mind is "in" society, an answer that, like you, I find
puzzling. "From society" as Bo translates Maggie's answer is better,
but not an answer to the original question. Pirsig says (letter to
McWatt, 1/2/98) "To prevent confusion, the MOQ treats 'mind' as the
exact equivalent of 'static intellectual patterns' . . . " But then the
question becomes, "What are static intellectual patterns in?" Is it
necessary for we MOQites to ignore time and place? Do not the words
"level" and "pattern" presume a spatial/temporal metaphysics?
