May I suggest that we reject the Machine Only theory of evolution (since it doesn't
have a hope in hell of explaining the emergence of sentience or
consciousness, but is required to do so, since it assumes they DID
emerge), and also reject Ghost in the Machine theories (like Intelligent
Design, since it is, as you say, an awfully inefficient, and painful,
way of going about producing the Omega Point, and looks suspiciously ad
hoc). Instead I offer the Machine, (and Life, Society, and Intellect) in
the Ghost (aka Quality) theory. Quality rocks (a pun, also "Quality
matters"), and lives, and socializes, and thinks.
