Right you are, I now sit ringside to watch Gary and Scott having it out with
each other :-) The good man Gary is inventing the internal/external
gunpowder over and over while Scott points to the fact that this issue was
brought to absurdity by Kant. It went like this: Berkeley showed that
qualities are internal and quantities external, but with Kant even the "filters"
(time, space, ..etc) that made the external quantities meaningful were
subjective (qualities) too!!!!. This is only a nudge away from saying that
quality is all there is, but the time wasn't ripe in the eighteen fifties ... hardly
in the nineteen fifties.
when Phaedrus' (ZMM) went nuts over this because he was from SOM (as
you recently said) and why that story must be treated with great care, but
Gary doesn't heed that and from those premises he may maintain that
S/O's mind/matter, internal/external still counts. At first Phaedrus landed on
the trinity variety of the MOQ: "Quality creates subjects and objects". This
may be interpreteded as if - next to Quality - internal/external is the
fundamental divide, but in the full-blown MOQ the static patterns aren't
internal/external-ordered at all. The attempt to integrate the SOM in the
MOQ the way Pirsig does (inorg.+org=external, social+intell.=internal) is
similar to how Ptolemaeus could infer his cosmology from the movements of
the heavenly bodies.
and so on ....
